About The Position

The North Carolina Zoo is growing and it is an exciting time to join our team. The NC Zoo is looking for a self-motivated and team-oriented Plumber. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and plumbing related utilities including hot and cold potable water systems, non-potable water systems, drain-waste-vent and sanitary sewer systems, compressed air systems, liquid and vapor propane lines. • Other work related to the plumbing trade. This includes all related pumps, piping, valves, fittings, fixtures, equipment, apparatus, and appurtenances. • Secondary responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting with the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, electrical, steel fabrication, hydraulics, carpentry, general construction, general building and park maintenance, and vehicle maintenance.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work after hours, holidays and weekend hours as necessary and available for on-call rotations and emergency call-back within 45 minutes.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have the agility and physically ability to regularly and safely: lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day; endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night.
  • Required to participate in the Zoo's occupational health program due to exposure with animal containment areas.
  • Must have very good written and oral communication skills.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; OR or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated working experience of the techniques, procedures, practices, of plumbing to include installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and plumbing related utilities.
  • Demonstrate working experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and/or specifications, equipment manuals, pump curves, etc.
  • Demonstrated work experience in reading and interpreting blueprints and building codes.
  • Proven experience with Electrical and electronics as it applies to pumps, motors, and controls.
  • Good computer skills for record keeping, time entry, etc.
