About The Position

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY STATEMENT The Department of Residential Facilities is responsible for the maintenance and housekeeping services for the College Park Campus' 70+ residence halls, Greek chapter houses, and recreational facilities encompassing over 2.7 million square feet. The department employs over 300 exempt, non-exempt, and student staff. Primary responsibilities: The Plumber position is responsible for performing a wide range of plumbing tasks at a journeyman’s level under general supervision. The Plumber Installs, repairs and maintains water, gas, sewer, storm and drain systems, and related equipment and pipelines and may act as the lead Plumber for some projects. The Plumber will be supervised by a Multi Trades Supervisor II. Driver’s License with fewer than 6 points is required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The incumbent will be required to work from ladders or scaffolding; to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies; and/or exert force up to 70 lbs. The incumbent is to work in hazardous or irritating environments and adverse weather or temperature conditions, wear and work in personal protective equipment, and work on a ladder up to 10 feet in height. Work will involve repetitive motion. The incumbent will be required to inspect work, which may involve bending, stooping, walking, and climbing. Will assist with/lead snow removal activities, which may require using snow removal equipment (tractors, snow blowers, shovels) and working outside in cold weather for extended periods. The incumbent will require extended hours/overtime work due to weather emergencies, scheduled openings, and closings of the residence halls.

Requirements

Driver’s License with fewer than 6 points is required
Four years progressively responsible experience in the plumbing trade.
Possession of a certification as a licensed plumber from the State of Maryland or from another state that qualifies for reciprocity in Maryland.
Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the theory, principles, methods and techniques used in the plumbing trade.
Thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; of OSHA regulations related to the plumbing trade; of plumbing codes, the requirements for domestic water and waste disposal systems.
Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the plumbing trade; in the installation and repair of sanitary plumbing and appliances; in welding, soldering, and threading pipe.
Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications; to prepare summaries and reports; to communicate effectively and follow directions; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job.
Candidates selected for employment may be required to be trained to work with asbestos and must be available for emergencies on an as needed basis.

Nice To Haves

High School Diploma or GED or trade-related secondary education is preferred
Incumbents hired should have experience in underground utilities (water, gas, sanitary lines, and/or steam), vents, and related equipment.
Incumbents hired for plumbing trade duties must possess a current WSSC Master Plumber's License or a Maryland State Plumber's License.
Experience in higher education, large-scale housing, or facilities maintenance is preferred.
Commercial or residential service call repair experience is preferred
