About The Position
Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027. CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use. Central State Hospital is hiring for a Full-Time Plumber / Zone Mechanic.
Requirements
- Experience in the full range of repair and construction in the area of plumbing/pipefitting/steamfitter.
- Experience with installation of standard and correctional plumbing fixtures, and plumbing systems.
- Ability to perform small repairs in the areas of plumbing, electrical, HVAC and painting.
- Valid Virginia driving license.
- As a Trades Technician Ill you are on a rotating On Call/Call Back schedule.
- As a mission critical employee, there is an expectation that you respond to any and all emergency calls as stated in CSH PPS Policy Letter #2.

Responsibilities
- Perform plumbing preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance.
- Responsible for performing skilled maintenance, installation on plumbing and steam systems.
- Keeps track of materials needed works on drain systems and make sure system are flowing correctly.
- Complete corrective and preventative work orders on plumbing and steam systems.
- Responsible for performing maintenance and repair duties required of Zone Mechanics which involves aspects of carpentry, electrical, painting, and plumbing to keep assigned zone in working order.
- Able to assess potential problems, hazards and opportunities to maintain assigned Zone assets to prevent unplanned impairments.
- Maintain and perform maintenance on all records/ WO, PM, & CM.
- Maintain service maintenance records, work orders, and requisitions and other miscellaneous records as needed or requested by administration.
