About The Position

The Plumber II performs preventive and corrective maintenance on plumbing systems at the Main Hospital and Satellite Buildings. Installs, repairs, assembles and maintains water, sewage, drainage, air, gas appliance, pumps and vacuum systems and related equipment and facilities in accordance with pertinent state and local building codes. Participates in the hospital preventive maintenance (PM) program. This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health’s mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must hold a current Plumber License as issued by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) at the journeyman Level.
  • Minimum of five (5) years Hospital campus or commercial/industrial plumbing work experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years Healthcare experience with demonstrated advanced troubleshooting and plumbing repair experience.
  • Yes To drive an Augusta Health Vehicle, must also be 21 years old and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be approved by Risk Management.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States and meet Virginia state employment requirements
  • Must be able to read blueprints and other technical documentation.
  • Must demonstrate Advanced troubleshooting skills on a wide variety of facility plumbing systems including county water supply systems and the wastewater collection and disposal systems.
  • Basic computer keyboard skills necessary for sending and receiving e-mails and entering work status updates for assigned work orders.
  • Must be able to thread carbon steel pipe.
  • Must be able to solder copper tubing.
  • Must be knowledgeable of building code requirements as they pertain to plumbing systems.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.
  • Demonstrated skills with repairing sanitary drain systems, water softeners, steam traps, pumps and motors, reheat system and boilers.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal Plumbing Systems Training from a Vocational School or Military Technical School.
  • Acute Healthcare experience as a Plumber
  • Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment
  • Familiarity with Augusta Health’s systems, workflows, or organizational culture is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs a wide variety of plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Cuts, bends, solders, and installs piping systems as required to complete plumbing system repairs.
  • Installs, connects and test plumbing fixtures such as: sinks, toilets, urinals, hot water heaters and drinking fountains.
  • Replaces pumps and pump couplings.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs a wide variety of pumps including but not limited to: sump pumps and float switches, swimming pool pumps, hot water circulating pumps and chilled water pumps.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on hot water heaters, pressure relief valves, pump motors, kitchen grease traps and dishwashing machines.
  • Orders repair parts and supplies.
  • Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in plumbing systems for the purpose of identifying repair and/or replacement needs.
  • Maintains freshwater system and wastewater system valves, pressure regulators, pressure gages and pumps.
  • Repairs pipe leaks and cleans traps and strainers.
  • Diagnosing trouble with or taking corrective action to correct clogged sanitary drain lines.
  • Performs minor building plumbing system upgrades.
  • Installs new equipment such as ice maker filters, strainers, water softeners, water coolers and unit heaters.
  • Participates in the hospital preventive maintenance (PM) program.
  • Updates the status of assigned work orders on the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Maintains pertinent records to document work completed.
  • Operates and maintains drain cleaning machines.
  • Proficient in the use of a pro-press/ solderless pipe coupling machine.
  • Trains new Plumbers assigned to the maintenance team.
  • Performs repairs on medical gas system piping and fittings.
  • Assists the Maintenance Supervisor in Planning Plumbing System outage work to perform system repairs.
  • Orders repair parts and scheduling contractors to perform repair and modification work.
  • Assists the Maintenance Supervisor in coordinating the work efforts of various contractor tasks including but not be limited to: annual back-flow preventer testing, fire sprinkler system testing, and insurance company inspections of heat exchangers and pressure vessels.
  • Tests backflow preventer valves.
  • As a member of the Hospital maintenance team he performs a wide variety of routine building maintenance tasks including: door hardware repairs, replacing light bulbs, clearing clogged sinks and toilets, laundry department equipment repairs, repairing furniture and moving furniture.
  • As part of the Hospital maintenance team, provides after hours call-in support on a rotating schedule basis and comes to work in a timely manner in response to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Assists other maintenance trades with troubleshooting and repairing various mechanical and electrical systems.
  • May be required to use hospital vehicles for various reasons (going to supply houses, travel between buildings on the Augusta Health Campus and throughout the county etc.).
  • During the winter months, assists with shoveling snow on sidewalks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
