About The Position

The Company NorthMark Compute & Cloud (NMC²) is backed by dedicated leadership and investment, with a clear mission as it operates at the bleeding edge of technology. Its goal is to scale and enhance the high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud infrastructure that supports its clients' research, production, and delivery, enabling breakthroughs that shape the industries of tomorrow. Its engineers build critical infrastructure to eliminate friction in scientific research, simulations, analysis, and decision-making, accelerating discovery and driving faster innovation. The Position The Platform Architecture Manager will lead a team of architects responsible for defining and driving the platform architecture vision for NMC2. This role will establish the architecture decision-making framework, guide cloud, CIS security, observability, and SDLC platform maturity, and ensure alignment with enterprise technology strategy. As part of the broader Architecture organization, this leader will act as a bridge between platform engineering, product management, program management, and other architecture teams, driving architectural consistency, security, and developer enablement across on-premises and cloud environments. This role is pivotal in shaping the next generation of secure, scalable, and developer-friendly platforms that underpin high-performance computing (HPC) workloads and enterprise engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading enterprise or platform architecture teams within large-scale or high-performance environments.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud architecture (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and hybrid on-prem/cloud integration.
  • Deep understanding of DevSecOps, SDLC automation, and developer enablement practices.
  • Expertise in security frameworks (CIS, NIST, ISO 27001) and embedding them into platform design.
  • Strong understanding of observability, telemetry, and reliability engineering (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to define architecture governance frameworks and decision models (ADRs, reference architectures, standards).
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical programs across engineering, product, and operations organizations.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence senior technical leaders.
  • Strong people leadership and mentoring skills, fostering collaboration across distributed teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in high-performance computing (HPC), distributed systems, or large-scale infrastructure platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation), Kubernetes, and GitOps frameworks.
  • Proven success in designing or scaling developer platforms or internal developer portals (IDPs) such as Backstage or Port.
  • Experience defining and governing API lifecycle management across enterprise organizations.
  • Familiarity with platform observability frameworks and data-driven operational models.
  • Exposure to multi-tenant or regulated environments requiring compliance and audit controls.
  • Experience driving capability mapping and platform maturity models.
  • Understanding of GenAI and its integration into developer or platform workflows.
  • Strong collaboration history with security and compliance teams to drive “secure by default” architecture.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or CCSP
  • TOGAF or equivalent Enterprise Architecture certification

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of platform domain architects, including Cloud, Security, SDLC/API, and Data/Observability Architects.
  • Establish and maintain the Architecture Decision Record (ADR) process, ensuring traceable, transparent architectural decisions across the platform ecosystem.
  • Define the platform architecture roadmap—spanning cloud, security, observability, and developer experience—and align it with enterprise objectives.
  • Drive platform governance practices to ensure consistency in design principles, API contracts, and operational standards.
  • Partner with Engineering, Product, and Program Management teams to define priorities, shape platform strategy, and influence investment decisions.
  • Establish reference architectures and blueprints for hybrid and multi-cloud deployments supporting HPC clusters and cloud workloads.
  • Embed CIS benchmarks, security controls, and compliance frameworks into all platform designs and delivery models.
  • Lead the development of observability and telemetry standards, ensuring systems are instrumented for performance, reliability, and accountability.
  • Champion automation and self-service initiatives that reduce operational friction and empower engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with Solution Architecture, Product Architecture, and Data Center Architecture teams to ensure end-to-end platform consistency.
  • Oversee SDLC platform maturity assessments, ensuring unified developer experience and delivery efficiency.
  • Produce and review architectural documentation, including standards, patterns, and ADRs.
  • Promote innovation and experimentation, evaluating emerging technologies and automation frameworks relevant to HPC and platform engineering.
  • Partner with Security, Compliance, and Operations teams to strengthen governance, auditability, and resilience.
  • Represent Platform Architecture in enterprise-level technical strategy forums and architecture review boards.
