About The Position

A Tooling Engineer will assist in the design and development of Injection Mold tooling. Evaluate vendor capabilities and assist in vendor selection. Provide technical support to Engineering, Manufacturing and other operating departments needing assistance. Follow build, tryout, and approval of production tooling in a timely manner. Support Company Molding facility and tooling vendors to produce quality injection molds and maintain tooling capability to support production. Review and evaluate product designs to ensure manufacturability and suitability for tooling construction.

Requirements

  • Engineering Degree plus three years experience or Associate’s Degree plus eight years experience as a Journeyman mold maker with five years experience in similar work fields preferred.
  • Good communication and cooperation skills with all levels of manufacturing and management.
  • Good general capabilities in JIT, Thermoset and Thermoplastics.
  • B.S. in Engineering or technical area with 5 to 7 years experience in tool or mold processing environment preferred.
  • Travel & overtime may be required.
  • Increased occasions of the aforementioned expected during launch.

Responsibilities

  • Define tooling requirements and provide cost estimates and quotations to Project Management for customer approval.
  • Obtain and evaluate quotes for new tooling, tooling revisions, and repair work.
  • Develop, maintain, and track tooling build schedules and progress charts to support company launch and production timelines.
  • Limited travel to domestic and international tooling vendors to conduct on-site design reviews, tool buy-offs, and production trials.
  • Supervise tooling startup, debug, and validation activities at company facilities and external vendor locations.
  • Manage tooling projects through approval, production release, and final payment milestones.
  • Coordinate and oversee engineering changes, tool modifications, and major repairs performed both in-house and at external tooling suppliers.
  • Provide technical input and recommendations for capital equipment purchases related to tooling and manufacturing processes.
  • Maintain awareness of current and emerging tooling technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, mini-improvement projects, and required training activities.
  • Maintain and manage the tooling database, including tool drawings and documentation, using CAD software (SpinFire experience preferred).
  • Lead and participate in tooling meetings; communicate equipment status, tooling issues, and resolution plans to manufacturing, ensuring open and effective cross-functional communication.
