About the position

The State University of New York College of Optometry, located at 33 West 42nd Street in Manhattan, is accepting applications for a NYS Department of Civil Service Plant Utilities Engineer 1. Duties include responsibility for the proper operation of the Facility Equipment including, HVAC system, Perimeter Heating, Plumbing and Water supply, and other components of the college physical plant. Candidate will conduct routine preventive maintenance and respond to service calls for equipment malfunction of comfortable environment. Candidate will operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair mechanical and electrical equipment as directed or requested through the work order management system. Candidate is required to have working knowledge of computer system and Building Management System. Candidate may be required to supervise subordinate staff as needed and supervise contractors working on site.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure proper operation of Facility Equipment including HVAC system, Perimeter Heating, Plumbing, and Water supply.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance.
  • Respond to service calls for equipment malfunction.
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Supervise subordinate staff and contractors as needed.

Requirements

  • Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.
  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering.
  • Four years of full-time hands-on experience in maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, computer applications of digital energy platforms and building analytics, or performing diagnosis and repair of HVAC systems or boilers.
  • Four years of full-time hands-on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance repair of HVAC systems or boilers.
  • Associate's degree in HVAC AND two years of qualifying experience.
  • Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) OR completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, or plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college AND two years of qualifying experience.
  • Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force.
  • Must have been an enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard OR possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Must have been an enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army.
  • Must have been an enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy.
  • Must have a Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) and have been a qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine.
  • Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC).
