About The Position

A Plant Preventative & General Maintenance Technician ensures Facilities machinery and equipment operate safely and efficiently by performing diverse repair and upkeep tasks, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, and executing repairs on mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical systems to ensure safe, efficient and aesthetic operation. This role works across multiple building systems and trades, diagnosing issues, replacing worn parts, maintaining equipment, and complying with safety regulations (OSHA/MSHA) to minimize equipment downtime. The technician handles routine electrical, plumbing, and HVAC jobs using various hand and power tools. They serve as a lead resource for complex work, support project planning, and provide mentoring and guidance to other technicians. This position is considered to be essential and may require coming in when the University is closed due to inclement weather.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Technical training or apprenticeship is strongly preferred
  • Vocational training/certification combined with 5+ years’ experience with building systems
  • Previous experience in industrial maintenance
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and control systems
  • Ability to diagnose malfunctions and determine necessary repairs
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (50+ lbs.)
  • Ability to work at heights
  • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions
  • Ability to report to management and demonstrated capacity to work with a wide range of individuals/staff
  • Effective communication with operations teams
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments
  • State Issued Driver’s License
  • Clean MVR
  • Trade or vocational school graduation and two years of experience in one or more of the building trades, or a combination of training and experience equal to eight+ years
  • Knowledge of MEP systems, building codes, and construction practice and the knowledge to operate tools required
  • Willingness to learn new skills and methods
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of the job, and the ability to climb ladders and work in high places and confined spaces
  • Familiarity with safety standards and procedures (e.g., OSHA regulations)
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints
  • Technology skills including MS Office, Internet, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment when necessary

Nice To Haves

  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Technician license
  • Valid NH Gasfitters License

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular & routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments on motors, pumps, HVAC and other miscellaneous facilities equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures on building mechanical equipment and building structures on a scheduled basis: inspect belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, grease bearings, seals, etc.; repair or replace broken parts
  • Perform routine servicing of equipment or facilities to prevent unexpected breakdowns and extend asset lifespan
  • Perform work to assist other trades, including, but not limited to, plumbers, electricians, and carpenters
  • Perform repairs and maintenance tasks in minor carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and mechanical trades, requiring basic skills but not a license or journeyman experience
  • Provide equipment & building condition assessments and recommend lifecycle actions
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical failures, dismantle equipment, and replace defective parts (drives, fans, motors, pumps, bearings/shafts, etc.)
  • Make independent decisions on repair vs. replace; perform major overhauls
  • Service pneumatic, and plumbing systems, including air compressors and HVAC
  • Address urgent requests and troubleshoot equipment failures to facilitate repair
  • Utilize building automation/energy management tools to diagnose system performance issues and support occupant comfort and operational efficiency
  • Maintain maintenance records, log repairs, and manage inventory of spare parts and supplies
  • Utilize the computerized facilities maintenance system to track work orders, repairs, log preventive maintenance, materials/supplies and service time
  • Adhere to all safety procedures (lockout/tagout), maintain a clean workspace, and ensure equipment compliance with environmental and company standards
  • Clean equipment and maintain mechanical rooms
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Participate in rotation; respond off-hours to outages, floods, heat loss, etc.
