The Tufting Operator at Shaw Plant 4 is responsible for managing the complete operation of a tufting machine. This includes leading the tufting machine team, logging downtime and other information into the TMS3, and maintaining production records for each machine operated during the shift. The operator will also be responsible for doffing completed buggies/rolls, printing tickets from TMS3 for each completed buggy, and checking stitch count and pile height at the startup of a machine and at least once per float. Additionally, the operator must inspect carpets for defects, make minor machine repairs, and ensure that the tufting machine and workstation are kept clean and orderly.

  • Lead the tufting machine team.
  • Log downtime and other information into the TMS3.
  • Fill out and maintain Production Records for each machine ran throughout shift.
  • Doff completed buggies/rolls.
  • Print tickets from TMS3 for each buggy completed.
  • Check stitch count and pile height at startup of a machine and at least once per float.
  • Check for crossed ends at startup of machine and throughout the shift and fix any found immediately.
  • Operate tufting machines, including cut pile and multiple thread-ups.
  • Inspect carpet for defects every 3 minutes or 50 feet.
  • Properly mend defects as needed.
  • Make minor machine repairs, such as changing hooks, blades, and needles.
  • Work with R&D on XR runs as needed.
  • Lead team with backing changes.
  • Cut weight checks, dye headers, and straight sews as needed.
  • Check all inspection lights to ensure they are working.
  • Remove unusable cones from the machine or work area.
  • Release conforming products to the next operation.
  • Identify non-conforming greige goods and yarn.
  • Record any cuts made in the carpet and mark them appropriately.
  • Ensure proper folding of carpet into the buggy.
  • Blow out the tufting machine daily and sweep up debris.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly tufter and workstation.
  • Clean up any oil or grease found in the work area.
  • Identify backing taken off a machine.
  • Execute special instructions on tufting shop orders.
  • Properly identify yarn lots used for mending and spider yarns.
