About The Position

Entry level planning position responsible for permit review, customer service, and the development and presentation of various forms of planning information used by planners, government officials, and the general public. Position reports to the Planning Manager.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (Bachelor’s degree preferred) in urban planning, architecture or landscape architecture, public administration, GIS or geography, or closely related field and two (2) years of directly related experience in urban planning, plans review, zoning administration, permitting, code enforcement, architecture; or equivalency of training and experience
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to: understand and communicate permitting and planning requirements related to the Florida Building code and/or local government land development codes and regulations
  • present data in graphic, pictorial, tabular, and written form
  • use appropriate software to perform research in support of planning cases and projects
  • establish and maintain effective working relations with City employees, officials, and the public
  • communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing
  • provide positive customer service
  • meet and deal courteously with the general public using tact and discretion
  • Familiarity with the following software: Microstation ArcGIS Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to operate telephones, smart phones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, scanner, digital camera, binder, plotter, laminator, calculators and all associated software.
  • The work also requires proficiency with computer hardware and software programs including word, spreadsheet and/or database applications, internet applications, and database management.

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or work experience in planning, research, geographic mapping is preferred
  • Experience with local government is preferred
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conducts permit reviews to ensure compliance with the Comprehensive Development Code
  • Assists with Planner on Call function by performing research and answering questions from the public
  • Performs research for planning projects under guidance of Planners
  • Prepares case maps, graphics and statistical information for the Planning Board, City Commission, internal departments, and external government agencies
  • Creates and maintains various databases and spreadsheets maps for land use, addresses, case histories, annexation agreements, and others
  • Coordinates with Pinellas County and other government agencies for verification of parcel specific information such as appraisals, land use, addresses, and City boundary issues
  • Takes photos, downloads photos, and scans graphics for planners, inspectors, and engineers
  • Performs research and drafts Standard Operating Procedures under direction of Planners
  • Assists with: annual Strategic Plan Update, performing necessary research and creating maps based on statistical information preparation of agenda items and other materials for advisory boards
  • Supports honest and transparent decision-making
  • Collaborates with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments

  • Performs related work as required.
  • As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.
