About The Position

This is a variabl e hour po sition which requires technical/professional or programming abilities related to: community planning; zoning; geographic information systems (GIS); urban design; civil engineering; forestry; and/or landscape architecture. The primary function of this position will be to assist with tasks related to planning, zoning, civil engineering, GIS, site plan review, site inspections, urban forestry, stormwater pond inspections, the street tree program, and similar tasks assigned by the Township. Based on the varying duties of the Planning Services Division and Engineering Services Division, candidates are not expected to have abilities in all of the technical/professional areas noted above.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Graduation from accredited high school or its equivalent; or any combination of experience and training, which will provide the minimum qualifications.
  • Some college courses in planning, zoning, civil engineering, GIS, urban design, forestry, arboriculture, plant biology, landscape architecture, or environmental fields of study required.
  • Minimum of 6 credits in any combination of these fields is required.
  • Must possess a current, valid Michigan Driver's License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns: which includes, but is not limited to, convictions for reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.
  • Good working knowledge of general planning and zoning concepts and/or GIS is required.
  • Ability to inspect outdoor sites in all seasons, including walking through natural areas where terrain is landscaped, graded, and/or uneven.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish good working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • This is a variable hour "At-Will" position. Hours will fluctuate. Work hours are determined based on workload, division requirements, availability and budget. Schedules and work hours are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time.
  • Employees in this classification are limited to an average of 29 hours or less per week.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical/professional or programming tasks related to planning, zoning, GIS, forestry, landscape architecture, and Planning Division and Engineering Division operations.
  • Reviews site plans and building plans.
  • Performs outdoor inspections of development sites, including landscaping and stormwater ponds.
  • Uses GIS software to create new maps, edit existing maps, collect field data, and assist with database management.
  • Update Canton's tree inventory, including collecting and updating street tree inventory data.
  • Update Canton's stormwater pond inventory, including collecting and updating field data.
  • Support the development of plans, including plans for urban forestry, forest stewardship, and natural resources management.
  • Operates office machinery and municipal equipment, such as computers, printers, and scanners.
  • Responds to telephone and email inquiries.
  • Assists in communicating and interpreting municipal regulations.
  • Creates and edits application forms and internal procedure forms.
  • Performs routine office procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
