About The Position

The Planner position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department assists with a variety of land use planning projects. This position reviews proposed development projects for compliance with local codes and standards, area plans, and policies. Work is performed under the supervision of the Principal Planner. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Experience: One (1) year of directly related experience
  • License/Certifications: A valid and unrestricted driver’s license with two (2) years of licensed driving is required.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Sustainable Built Environment, Geography, or Public Policy.
  • Experience planning, zoning, or public policy.
  • Experience in land use planning or public policy development in an office setting.
  • American Planning Association: American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews development projects proposed on private property daily for conformance with zoning codes.
  • Analyzes the applicants plans and proposals, communicates corrections, comments, and recommendations to applicants via electronic permitting software.
  • Processes and evaluates proposals for zoning modifications electronically.
  • Assists the public by providing information on zoning laws and land use planning programs regarding permitting inquiries.
  • Responds to zoning and private development inquiries received from the public as well as various contractors with relevant zoning information.
  • Provides zoning and permit information to customers at the front counter.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to analyze various development proposals and conceptual designs.
  • Coordinates with other City staff weekly and presents information and comments regarding project proposals to public and various contractor applicants.
  • Provides assistance on special projects or initiatives, such as complex development projects, zoning code updates, or planning initiatives on a monthly basis and prepares electronic documents and presentations that communicate complex information.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
