About the position

The Planner position at the City of Cottage Grove involves aiding in the daily operations and future growth of the community. The role focuses on providing zoning and land use information, reviewing applications for compliance with zoning regulations, and preparing reports for various city commissions and councils. The Planner will also conduct field surveys, assist in code enforcement, and utilize geographic information software for planning activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide zoning and land use information to the public in-person, over the phone, and via email or written correspondence.
  • Review applications for building permits for compliance with the City's zoning regulations.
  • Evaluate applications for variances, conditional use permits (CUPs), and land use proposals for conformance with the City's Comprehensive Plan and ordinances.
  • Prepare and present reports to the City's Planning Commission and City Council as needed.
  • Write and research reports, long-term planning documents, ordinances, and other necessary documents.
  • Manage and monitor subdivision agreements and financial guarantees.
  • Coordinate assigned committee activities.
  • Conduct field surveys and on-site inspections to ensure compliance with variances and CUP conditions.
  • Assist the code enforcement division with the enforcement of City ordinances.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all planning activities within the City.
  • Utilize geographic information software for map preparation and statistical research.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in planning or a closely related field.
  • Three years of experience in a similar or related position preferred.
  • Municipal experience strongly desired.
  • Thorough knowledge of urban planning principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of legal aspects of planning and zoning administration.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, creativity, judgment, and resourcefulness in planning projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in GIS and ability to use a personal computer as a planning tool.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in municipal planning activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships with elected officials and the public.
