About The Position

The San Francisco Planning Department is recruiting for two (2) 5291 Planner III positions. Specific information regarding this recruitment process are listed below: Application Opening: April 22, 2025 Application Deadline: June 4, 2025. The Department plays a central role in guiding the growth and development in our City. The Department works with other City agencies and the community to help achieve great planning for a great city. Our mission is to shape the future of San Francisco and the region by generating an extraordinary vision for the General Plan and in neighborhood plans, fostering exemplary design through planning controls, improving our surroundings through environmental analysis, preserving our unique heritage, encouraging a broad range of housing and a diverse job base, and enforcing the Planning Code.

Requirements

  • Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university or foreign equivalent degree in City, Regional or Urban Planning, or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years (4,000 hours) of verifiable full-time-equivalent experience in an urban, city, regional and/or other related planning environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience engaging diverse stakeholders in the Tenderloin, particularly with Chinese and Spanish populations.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Power BI, ArcGIS, Python).
  • Strong communication and research skills.

Responsibilities

  • Engages in urban planning activities as part of Tenderloin Community Action Plan team.
  • Engages directly with responsible community, neighborhood organizations, focus groups, public meetings, and City agencies.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets reports and data to provide operational context for output metrics.
  • Oversees small City grants to neighborhood communities.
  • Conducts, facilitates, participates in, and attends agency and community meetings.
  • Makes public presentations regarding progress and outcomes of Tenderloin planning initiatives.
  • Engages in one-on-one interactions with residents and stakeholders.
  • Understands, assigns, and tracks agreed upon action items represented in long term Tenderloin Community Action Plan.
  • Provides information orally and in writing to residents, community organizations, City agencies, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Performs difficult and responsible planning work in land use, zoning, development, recreation, urban design, urban economics and finance, housing, code enforcement, historic preservation and real estate.
  • Supervises or assists in the preparation and design of research surveys and projects.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of reports and planning studies.
  • Processes applications and provides information on planning policies, contracts, budgets, and procedures.
  • Conducts limited environmental reviews and may also coordinate environmental review processes.
  • Reviews various building and land use permit applications.
  • Conducts site and field inspections of land, economic activities, transit patterns, and buildings and streets.
  • Prepares governmental documents such as public notices and staff reports.
