We are seeking a creative, highly skilled, and collaborative individual to support the Planning and Development Services Department in its goals, initiatives, and efforts for the citizens of Lawrence, Kansas.

  • Perform complex professional-level work in the current and long-range planning fields.
  • Provide information and assistance to other city departments, governing bodies, city/county planning commission, developers, the business community, neighborhood representatives, and the general public on land use & growth-related issues.
  • Process new and redevelopment projects and other development-related matters.
  • Provide Planner of the Day assistance.
  • Attend evening meetings as required.
  • Participate in the review of development proposals and applications for compliance with appropriate regulations and policies; prepare reports on recommendations.
  • Respond to general procedural inquiries from the public regarding the development process.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of land development codes and master plans that pertain to land use, rezoning, special use, variances, and subdivisions.
  • Assemble staff reports and packets for Commission meetings, and prepare property owner letters, mailings, and other public notices.
  • Conduct research regarding property characteristics and history, utilizing a wide variety of data sources.
  • One (1) year of professional planning experience in urban planning or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, environmental studies, geography, or a closely related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners is preferred.
  • Competent with Microsoft computer software and able to produce graphs, maps, and publisher-type planning documents.
  • Hands-on computer experience in ArcView is desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of good planning theory and design, and the ability to apply this understanding to both current and long-range goals of the community.
