About The Position

The Fleischmann Planetarium within the University of Nevada, Reno College of Science invites applications for two Planetarium LED Dome Specialist positions. These positions provide specialized technical leadership for the George W. Gillemot Foundation LED Dome System, a complex integrated COSM CX system that powers more than 3,700 LED panels within the planetarium’s immersive dome environment. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Science, the specialists will support and maintain complex server architecture, visualization software, and technical operations to ensure seamless audio-visual performance. The Planetarium LED Dome Specialists troubleshoot and maintain computerized, electrical, mechanical, and optical systems that support a wide range of programming, including K–12 education, university instruction, research visualization, and public events. The role requires strong independent problem-solving, coordination with technical staff and campus partners, and flexibility to support events outside standard business hours. Serving as a technical liaison across university units, these specialists apply adaptive troubleshooting and operational expertise to support the planetarium’s mission as a cornerstone of UNR’s museum and informal learning ecosystem. The position enables dynamic presentations that integrate scientific research, artistic expression, and cultural education in a state-of-the-art immersive environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of related professional work experience OR Master’s degree and two (2) years of related professional work experience.
  • Expertise in computer technology
  • Demonstrated audio visual experience
  • Two (2) or more years’ experience handling new technologies regarding AV hardware troubleshooting.
  • Experience in media production and presentation skills
  • Flexible hours including nights and weekends
  • Physical ability to work on ladders, scissor lifts and in confined areas.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity working in science centers, planetariums or other educational facilities
  • Knowledge regarding visualization software and/or presentation software
  • Knowledge of windows operating system and maintaining servers
