About The Position

The St. Cloud Building Safety Department is accepting applications for a Plan Reviewer I. Work involves the responsibility for reviewing industrial, commercial and residential building plans and specifications for conformance with the Minnesota State Building Code (MSBC) and for preparing a list of discrepancies and working plans accordingly. Work also involves conducting some field inspections, evaluating topography overlays and elevations and assisting other City Departments in the plan review process and processing permits through other City departments. Almost all of the plan checking for the MSBC is performed independently, once all requirements of the MSBC are known and understood.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school supplemented by coursework in construction technology
  • Two years experience in general building construction
  • Possession of certification by ICC as a plans examiner within six months of appointment or a minimum of 2 years experience doing plan review for a municipality
  • Possession of Valid Minnesota issued driver's license that is unrestricted except for corrective lenses
  • Must be able to provide own appropriate transportation

Responsibilities

  • Interviews building permit applicants and provides advice as to what needs to be revised to meet code requirements.
  • Reviews building plans, specifications and blueprints for conformance with code requirements; issues or denies permits.
  • Investigates alleged code violations of buildings.
  • Assists homeowners, contractors, architects and others in interpreting construction codes and in removing violations; prepares letters to architects and engineers regarding conversions of plans for code compliance.
  • Conducts field inspections of buildings and structures as assigned.
  • Performs other work as required and assigned.
