Plan Examiner/Building Inspector

About The Position

The City of Birmingham (EOE) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Plan Examiner/ Building Inspector. Under the supervision of the Building Official, the Plan Examiner/Building Inspector inspects all plans for new residential and commercial construction and renovations for compliance with existing building codes and regulations. Meets and communicates with developers, architects, homeowners, engineers and others in the review of plans. Receives and responds to requests for information. Performs building inspections as needed, issues code violations and prepare reports as required. Performs miscellaneous related job duties. FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is not to be treated as all inclusive. Conducts reviews of construction plans, plan revisions, architectural and engineering drawings, equipment specifications and related documentation for compliance with adopted building code regulations. Performs field reviews when necessary to compare actual construction to approved plans, adopted codes and ordinances; works to resolve any discrepancies. Coordinates building reviews with other City departments and outside agencies. Attends pre-application meetings and provides guidance to comply with building codes and City regulations and presents known issues on projects. Answers inquiries concerning the building code and construction procedures. Advises on technical matters pertaining to the building code and permitting process. Prepares and maintains records of building plan reviews and enters data into City tracking system. Inspects new and existing building and structures as required to determine compliance with adopted codes and approved plans; reports on all violations and variations from adopted codes; issues code violations for corrective action and follows up on corrective orders. Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of current State building codes and regulations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
Time management skills, strong customer service skills.
Ability to work independently with competing priorities.
Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver's license with a good driving record.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Registered Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer by the State of Michigan pursuant to PA 54.
Minimum of 3 years progressive experience as a registered Building Inspector, Plan Examiner or Building Official.
Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
Must be able to sit for long periods of time
Must be able to stand for long periods of time
Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions
