About The Position

From giraffes to cheetahs, tigers, white rhinos, and African hoofstock-our Plains/Carnivore Keepers do it all! The Indianapolis Zoo is searching for a Full-Time Plains/Carnivore Keeper to join our wild herd! The ideal candidate is committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. The successful candidate must display a professional attitude to all visitors, co-workers, and volunteers and be strongly team-oriented with excellent communication skills. Prior experience working with African hoofstock, lions, reindeer, white rhinos, tigers, brown bears, red pandas, kangaroos, and/or cheetahs is highly desired. Prior work in the animal care industry is required. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position that requires availability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. This role involves a great deal of interaction with the public, requiring strong speaking skills and the ability to provide outstanding customer service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in life sciences, zoology, or a related field is required.
  • Two (2) years of prior work experience at a zoo or animal care-related organization is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to exert at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
  • Valid driver's license and driving record insurable by the Zoo's insurance.

  • Prior experience working with African hoofstock, lions, reindeer, white rhinos, tigers, brown bears, red pandas, kangaroos, and/or cheetahs is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Perform husbandry tasks and manual work involving the care and maintenance of animals and exhibits.
  • Complete daily and weekly area duties, including reports.
  • Assist in training seasonal care staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Assist veterinary staff during routine and specialized procedures as needed.
  • Train animals and provide enrichment activities to promote mental stimulation and physical activity.
  • Follow dietary guidelines for food preparation.
