About The Position

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to employee success and we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Review more information at BNL | Benefits Program Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges. Position Description BNL's EIC division has an immediate opening for Piping\ Mechanical Designer to join our growing Design and Documentation Group. As Piping Designer you will be responsible for developing, designing, and documenting piping systems used to transport cryogenic fluids such as liquid helium, liquid nitrogen, and liquid hydrogen. The designer works closely with Cryogenic engineers, analysts, and technicians to create safe, efficient, and maintainable piping layouts that meet all project and safety requirements. As a Mechanical Designer you will be under the technical direction of the group leader and other engineers/scientists, you will play a key role in designing the equipment to be used in our new accelerator. This equipment includes magnets, power supplies, RF systems, vacuum equipment, accurately positioned support structures, remote drive systems, lifting fixtures, and civil facilities including building layouts and water/air cooling systems. The assignments you will work on will usually be on a project basis, which will require a high degree of initiative and judgement to plan, coordinate, and perform your design efforts.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus: a BS degree in a technical field and 6 years work experience or;
  • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 10 years experience or;
  • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 11 years relevant work experience or;
  • 12 years relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency in using PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and/or Solid Works 3D CAD software designing mechanical components and systems for fabrication.
  • Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing/machine shop processes, welding, hardware & component choice, manufacturing, installation, and dimensioning and tolerances.
