About The Position

The Conversions Pipe and Structural Engineer will be responsible for supporting the technical execution of commercial projects pertaining to the design and development of gas turbine (GT) auxiliary systems, such as inlet bleed heat, exhaust bleed, sequential fuel injection, inlet anti-ice systems, as well as packaged skids.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or related field.
Candidate must be a self-starter with a can-do approach, with experience speaking to internal and external customers, suppliers and plant engineers.
Exceptional verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills are required.
5+ years of experience designing pipe and structural support systems; direct experience related to industrial gas turbine auxiliaries is preferred.
Working knowledge of the principles of gas turbine operations and upgrades.
Experience with common auxiliary system components, including control valves, instrumentation, spring cans, expansion joints and flex hoses.
Hands on experience with CAD and FEA software, with experience modeling systems for mechanical and thermal stresses.
Knowledge of sound drafting practices and ANSI Geometric Tolerancing standards required.
Strong analytical decision-making
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
Both international and domestic travel is required on an as needed basis, with ability to perform or direct hands-on field work.

Nice To Haves

Master’s Degree preferred.
Knowledge of weld processes and procedures, machining methods, and application of coatings is preferred.

Responsibilities

Work closely with and provide technical guidance to Outside Technical Service (OTS) providers to design Industrial Gas Turbine (IGT) auxiliary piping systems and components that comply with project requirements and applicable codes.
Review and approve IFA and IFR drawing packages and stress analyses from OTS providers, ensuring all design considerations have been captured, meet applicable criteria, life and duty cycle requirements and are suitable for construction.
Conduct Conversions Design Reviews (CDR) of application-specific auxiliary systems and component performance with internal and external teams.
Lead Conversion projects as assigned in accordance with PSM Process OP3031, prepare and conduct installation readiness reviews and develop and release documentation for site installations.
Draw and layout pipe systems using Creo software for select projects.
Analyze components and sub-systems to ensure parts meet life requirements and design criteria.
Visit power plants to support walkdowns prior to design phases as well as installation of the auxiliary system by OTS contractors during the outage.
Assist Sales and Tendering activities by executing Technical Risk Reviews.
Create, lead and deliver presentations to internal and external clients.
Review OEM and PSM auxiliary component materials, design features, and configurations to understand design intent. Compare designs among different engines (based on manufacturer), different versions (based on design evolution over time), and different part numbers with the goal of identifying the most effective solutions that are customized as needed for the application.
Select materials, coatings, and weld filler metals as needed for the applicable temperature and stress levels.
Assist Drafting, Configuration Management, Field Service and Commercial teams with part numbers, assembly numbers, system level configurations, and other related activities for PSM hardware.
Work collaboratively with other disciplines such as Aerothermal, Electrical, Structural, and Product Engineering to develop designs that meet applicable criteria.
Work across departments to provide technical support as requested. Support roles include technical responsibility for troubleshooting at vendors and customers sites as necessary.
Assess needs and identify critical path schedules for design, manufacturing and procurement activities.
Participate in internal discipline meetings, training sessions, technical conferences and customer events.
Mentor and train interns and less experienced peers as required.
Occasionally support installation of PSM combustion and compressor hardware during outages, review engine run hardware for field durability issues and of documentation of various configurations.
Travel up to 15% to support customer outages and vendor related activities.
