About The Position

The Piping Designer provides essential technical expertise and performs piping design work of moderate to advanced complexity. The role may function as an Area Lead Designer or a senior staff designer, supporting engineering, procurement, and construction activities on large industrial and nuclear projects. Senior-level designers execute complex design tasks independently, while Principal-level designers provide advanced technical leadership, oversight, and guidance to other designers.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Associate degree in a related technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Senior Level: Minimum 10 years of relevant piping design experience
  • Principal Level: Minimum 15 years of relevant piping design experience
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal (including DOE orders), state, and local codes and standards
  • Knowledge of discipline codes and standards applicable to piping design
  • Experience supporting EPC projects on large industrial or nuclear facilities
  • Proficiency executing large engineering projects in a multi-discipline environment
  • Strong communication skills with project teams, vendors, and subcontractors
  • Intermediate computer skills including word processing, email, spreadsheets, and presentations
  • Ability to work efficiently while maintaining a high level of attention to detail
  • Proficiency using Bentley MicroStation with experience producing drawings with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Intergraph Smart 3D (S3D) with a minimum of 3 years of experience
  • Working knowledge of piping design requirements including equipment arrangement, piping layout, stress considerations, and material requirements
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, vendor drawings, and discipline design documentation

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting nuclear facilities under ASME NQA-1 requirements
  • DOE or other U.S. Federal Government project experience
  • Practical field experience
  • Knowledge of commercial availability and cost of piping materials
  • Experience with SmartPlant Review software
  • Experience with nuclear, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology facilities

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and check piping designs utilizing 3D modeling and 2D CADD automation tools
  • Serve as Area Lead Designer or senior staff designer, providing technical guidance to designers as assigned
  • Coordinate technical issues with engineering disciplines, project management, vendors, and clients
  • Execute work in compliance with approved project scope, cost, schedule baselines, and quality plans
  • Perform bulk material take-offs, tabulations, and material analyses
  • Provide technical support for equipment and material procurement, including vendor submittal reviews
  • Support construction administration activities, including RFIs and field changes
  • Produce and review complex piping drawings including plot plans, piping plans, isometrics, and sketches
  • Interpret and generate design drawings with minimal supervision
  • Provide assistance to construction and pipe fabrication personnel
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Prepare 3D layouts and schematics for conceptual and detailed designs of advanced complexity
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting and design within engineering disciplines such as piping, mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, architectural, or fire protection
  • Experience updating master P&IDs and pipe line lists
