About The Position

The Piping Design Group Leader will serve as a lead piping designer on projects while overseeing design efforts within their area of expertise. This role supports the manager by ensuring standardization and best practices through model reviews, drawing checks, and maintenance of department tools. The group leader also provides coaching and mentoring to the design team and contributes to the creation and maintenance of standard drawings, templates, Plant 3D catalogs, and specifications.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Computer-Aided Drafting or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a pipe designer is required.
  • Senior-level proficiency in Plant 3D and ability to train and mentor others is required.
  • Knowledge of piping design practices and industry requirements, including design codes, jurisdictions, and pressure testing requirements.
  • Continuing education is required.
  • Proficient in Navisworks Freedom/Simulate/Manage.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work with shop and fabrication leads to discuss constructability.
  • Self-directed, forward-thinking, and able to work across disciplines.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows programs.
  • Strong time management and change management skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers, clients, vendors, and other stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Plant 3D Smart P&IDs is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Vault is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and coach less experienced designers to ensure efficient pipe routing and adherence to best practices.
  • Provide technical support and collaborate with engineering and project management on technical decisions throughout the project.
  • Conduct peer reviews to ensure compliance with engineering standards, company standards, and customer specifications.
  • Check drawings for correct dimensions, codes, specifications, and required standards.
  • Create and maintain pipe specifications and catalogs within Plant 3D.
  • Provide solutions when projects encounter complex pipe designs.
  • Assist the manager with creating, maintaining, and enforcing department standard drawings, blocks, and templates.
  • Ensure ongoing engagement with manufacturing and construction for lessons learned and updates to standards.
  • Support continuous improvement of pipe design best practices.
  • Lead 3D model design reviews.
  • Create functional and constructible designs to reduce fabrication errors.
  • Develop 3D piping models from P&IDs, specifications, and equipment details.
  • Create, read, and interpret line lists, valve lists, and tie-in lists.
  • Apply proper pipe support details, locations, and spans.
  • Review and redline equipment and component vendor drawings.
  • Create and revise P&IDs, PFDs, piping orthographics, and isometrics.
  • Assemble fabrication and installation drawing packages.
