The Pipefitter/Steamfitter position at Western Michigan University involves providing highly skilled craft labor to install, repair, replace, and perform preventive maintenance on the University's heat and hot water distribution system. This role is essential for ensuring the efficient operation of the piping systems that deliver steam and return condensate for heating and domestic use. The successful candidate will work with various tools and equipment to maintain the integrity of the piping infrastructure, which includes air separators, expansion tanks, domestic hot water heaters, valves, strainers, and traps. In this role, the Pipefitter/Steamfitter will be responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining all piping and devices necessary for the delivery of steam and the return of condensate. This includes working on underground pipes, pipes located in vaults and steam tunnels, and those concealed in floors, walls, and ceilings. The position requires the ability to bleed hydronic heating systems, clean coils in hydronic heating systems and domestic water heaters, and change coils in heat vent units. Additionally, the candidate will test traps in steam heating lines, replace or repair traps, and repair heating elements and wall-mounted convectors. The role also involves locating underground pipelines, excavating as necessary, and providing information to update building and systems drawings. The Pipefitter/Steamfitter will determine inventory requirements for supplies and materials, maintain the work area and tools, and may assist in the technical training of apprentices. This position is crucial for maintaining the safety and efficiency of the University's heating systems, and it requires a strong understanding of the trade and the ability to work in various environmental conditions.
