About The Position

The University of Virginia is built on a district energy model managed by Energy and Utilities within Facilities Management, with one main heat plant, three combined heating/cooling plants, nine chiller plants, hundreds of miles of piping distribution, and an internal medium voltage electrical distribution grid anchored by three 35kV to 13kV substations. E&U serves over 18 million gross square feet of learning, research, residential, and support space across a geographically dispersed 1175 acres. The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management – Utilities Distribution team invites applications for a Pipefitter or Senior Pipefitter for Utility Systems. The incumbent will be part of a team responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's infrastructure which includes 9 miles of steam and condensate, 7 miles of steam tunnel, 23 miles of heating water, 24 miles of chilled water, 41 miles of domestic water, 69 miles of stormwater, 26 miles of sanitary sewer and 5,000 structures, separators, inlets, and BMP’s.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Four years of experience
  • Seven years of experience. Four years of experience in plumbing or mechanical trade.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to the following: HVAC, plumbing trades and heating plants, as well as operating room and clinical areas.
  • Repair, maintain, and install steam lines, chilled water lines, gas lines, suction lines, and instruments.
  • Perform installations or replacements of water, storm, sanitary sewer, steam and heating hot water, condensate, chilled water piping systems, and related equipment.
  • Read and interpret construction documents and shop drawings.
  • Anticipate job requirements and order materials.
  • Increase familiarity of area equipment and piping systems of all buildings.
  • Notify customers and supervisors of status of work and any complications, which will change the schedule.
  • Perform scheduled inspections.
  • Develop an increasing knowledge of types of materials and equipment used on projects for the various utility systems.
  • Work individually or on a team to execute repairs or installations.
  • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, and National Electrical Code.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned by the supervisor, such as setup for special events, and snow and ice removal.
  • Fabricate tanks and structural supports, and weld high pressure lines and pressure vessels.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to Pipefitters and inspect the quality of work.
