About The Position

Vigor Marine CM San Diego, a Vigor Marine Group company, is a certified Master Ship Repair Contractor for the U.S. Navy, specializing in ship repair and modernization projects for the Navy and Military Sealift Command. They perform maintenance and modernization on all classes of major surface vessels, including CVN, CG, DDG, and amphibious ships like LHD, LHA, LSD, LPD, and auxiliary ships. Their work covers Combatant, Hull, Mechanical and Electrical, and Habitability systems to support the U.S. Fleet's readiness and mission success. The Pipefitter is responsible for the proper removal and installation of various piping systems, including cutting, grinding, and prepping pipes. This role requires the ability to read blueprints, diagrams, and sketches, understand different joint designs according to MIL-STD -22D, and have basic knowledge of MIL-STD-777F and NSTP-278. The Pipefitter must also be able to obtain a Silver Braze certification, understand hazards associated with opening tanks and voids, and perform all required testing (hydrostatic, operational) in accordance with shipboard procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years’ pipe and shipyard experience
  • Ability to read and understand basic work specs, drawings, and diagrams
  • Demonstrated knowledge of shipboard piping systems
  • Understands shipboard terminology utilizing MIL-SPEC and NAVSEA references
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic reading and mathematics is required for fit-up, lay-out, and fabrication of piping systems
  • Demonstrated ability to identify multiple types of fittings, and what they are used for
  • Demonstrated ability to identify different piping systems based off of abbreviations commonly used onboard the ship
  • Demonstrated understanding of TAC numbers used to identify locations throughout the ship
  • Maintains a silver braze qualification for CuNi (copper-nickel) piping systems onboard ships
  • Maintains fire-watch qualification
  • Complies with all Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security Policies and Procedures
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of professional and ethical behavior, putting the company values and commitments at the forefront of decisions and actions

  • Understanding of the different joint designs IAW with MIL-STD -22D
  • Basic knowledge of MIL-STD-777F, and NSTP-278
  • Ability to obtain a Silver Braze certification
  • General knowledge of the hazards associated with opening tanks and voids, including the installation of proper blanks and plugs to obtain Gas Free status

Responsibilities

  • Proper removal, and/or installation of various piping systems
  • Cutting, grinding, and prepping multiple sizes and material types of pipe
  • Accomplish all required testing (hydrostatic, operational, etc.) IAW shipboard procedures
  • Plans, prepares, installs, and maintains shipboard piping systems
  • Consults blueprints, work orders, schematics, or instructions; creates working procedure based on specifications
  • Gathers equipment and materials for the job
  • Installs various types of insulation and pipe covering; safely removes and properly discards of old coverings according to hazardous waste procedures and in accordance with company procedures
  • Inspects pipes, testing for pressure and leaks; reports and/or resolves problems
  • Maintains records, including safety logs and inspection details
  • Targets piping in shop for re-installation onboard the ship
  • Ensures daily clean-up of work site at end of each day
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
