The Pipe Welder 1st Class position is responsible for welding steel plates and pipes in the repair and/or construction of marine vessels, industrial components, and associated equipment. The welder must understand welding procedures and parameters, comprehend and utilize blueprints, sketches, drawings, and technical manuals. This role involves welding components in various positions (flat, vertical, or overhead) and performing related tasks such as cutting and grinding. The welder will also repair broken or cracked parts, fill holes, and increase the size of metal parts using various welding processes including gas welding, brazing, arc welding, wire fed welding, or TIG welding. Highly skilled welders may work with a variety of materials, such as titanium, aluminum, or exotic metals, in addition to steel. The position requires selecting and setting up welding equipment, executing planned welds, and examining welds to ensure they meet standards or specifications.
