Pipe layers are responsible for the safety, pace, and integrity of all mainline pipe crews. Responsibilities include (but may not be limited to): Work with excavator operators or crew leads to dig and place sewer, water, power, and storm drain piping. Align underground pipe within trenches per plan and survey layout. Prepare, layout, and install manholes, concrete boxes, vaults, etc. Identify problems within underground piping system designs and be part of finding a viable solution moving forward. Understand approved plans and help lay out piping and structures for productive installation. Ensure the quality of all work performed. Assist in backfill operations once work is inspected. Pipe layers are generally in this position for 3–4 years before moving into an operator or crew lead role. Pipe layers may be asked to train new pipe layers before advancing into a new position. Position advancement has several determining factors, depending on individual cases.
