The Pilot-in-Command (PIC) is accountable for the safe conduct of assigned flights. The PIC is responsible for the operation, safety and security of the aircraft and the safety of all crew members, passengers and cargo on board. Specific duties and responsibilities include ensuring that a flight will not be commenced if a flight crew member is incapacitated from performing duties by any cause such as injury, sickness, fatigue, or the effects of any psychoactive substance. The PIC must also ensure that the flight will not be continued beyond the nearest suitable aerodrome or heliport when a flight crew member's capacity to perform functions is significantly reduced by impairment of faculties from causes such as fatigue, sickness or lack of oxygen. Other responsibilities include operational control, security of the aircraft, checking weather and NOTAMs, determining fuel and oil requirements, ensuring aircraft airworthiness, completing pre-flight inspections, and operating the aircraft in accordance with company procedures.

  • Ensuring that a flight will not be commenced if a flight crew member is incapacitated from performing duties.

  • Responsibility for operational control as outlined in GOM 2.4.
  • Responsibility for the security of the aircraft during its operation.
  • Checking and assessing weather and all applicable NOTAMs.
  • Determining fuel, oil and requirements.
  • Determining the aircraft weight and balance limits.
  • Ensuring that all flight planning requirements have been met.
  • Ensuring that the aircraft is airworthy, duly registered and that the documentation and operational information are onboard.
  • Completing an aircraft pre-flight inspection as per the aircraft flight manual.
  • Ensuring that carriage of HazMat is packaged and stowed according to regulations.
  • Briefing the passengers in accordance with FAR Part 135 requirements.
  • Operating the aircraft in accordance with company procedures and aircraft limitations.
  • Completing all post flight duties as specified in the company operations manual.
  • Notifying the nearest appropriate authority of any accident involving the aircraft.
  • Submitting a report to the designated local authority following an act of unlawful interference.
  • Completing the aircraft log book.
  • Reporting to the appropriate ATS unit any hazardous weather or flight conditions encountered.
  • Participating in the safety management system.
  • Maintaining current medical certification.
  • Maintaining flight and duty log.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • The qualifications required to act as VFR PIC as specified in Part 135.243(b).
  • Instrument qualification - to pass IPC.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
