About The Position

Science teachers in Mount Vernon City School District (MVCSD) schools will: Prepare all students for success with New York State Regents Science exams; place an equal emphasis on developing scientific thinkers by inviting students to ask questions, develop models, carry out investigations and analyze data Guide students in applying their subject matter knowledge and skills through evidence-based scientific explanations and arguments and by challenging them to address real-world problems that impact the community students live in Help students see the relevance of science in their everyday lives, as well as equip their students with the tools necessary to be critical consumers and innovative problem solvers within modern day society

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required
  • A valid New York State Science/ Science Subject Area Certification
  • Proven record of accomplishment for planning lessons with clear learning objectives and a means for assessing whether those objectives have been met
  • Utilizes formal and informal assessment tools and knowledge of human development to employ appropriate learning activities.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated content knowledge and familiarity with New York State Science Learning Standards (i.e., Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas and Crosscutting Concepts, etc.)
  • Demonstrated success in tailoring instruction to the needs of diverse learners
  • Manages classroom routines and procedures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve common goals
  • Incorporates appropriate educational technology and media.
  • Regularly communicate with parents outside of report cards and scheduled conferences.
  • Attends all faculty meetings, workshops, faculty/staff retreats, assemblies, and celebrations.
  • Maintains teacher web pages, weekly updates of assignments and grades on the web portal, production of interim, quarterly and semester grades.
  • Reflects critically upon his or her teaching experience, identifies areas for further professional development as part of a professional development plan that is linked to grade level, department, and school philosophy, and is receptive to suggestions for growth.
