About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! The Physician serves as the lead clinical authority responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, on-site healthcare services to incarcerated individuals. Duties will include one or more designated institutions in the South Central Region. This role requires advanced diagnostic expertise, sound medical judgment, and up-to-date knowledge of clinical practices and technologies. The physician oversees healthcare operations within the region, ensuring compliance with standards and providing guidance to medical staff to support safe and effective patient care.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state of North Carolina.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers comprehensive primary care services, including acute and chronic medical treatment, preventive care, and health education for incarcerated individuals.
  • Evaluates and treats a wide range of internal medicine conditions, performs minor office-based surgical procedures, and refers complex cases to specialists.
  • Conducts sick call, emergency response, chronic disease clinics, physical exams, and follow-up care, while documenting all patient interactions in the HERO system.
  • Collaborates closely with nursing staff to ensure coordinated, effective healthcare delivery across all areas of the facility.
