Summary As a core clinical leader in an acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital, you’ll provide medical oversight for patients recovering from serious injury, illness, or surgery. You’ll work side-by-side with a multidisciplinary team — including therapists, nurses, case managers, and rehab specialists — to drive individualized care plans and help patients reach functional milestones. Your rounding will be frequent, hands-on, and deeply connected to patient progress, discharge planning, and safety outcomes.

Requirements

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
  • Board Certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Hospital Medicine.
  • Current state medical license and active DEA registration.
  • Strong clinical judgment, collaborative spirit, and commitment to patient-centered care.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in inpatient rehabilitation, hospital medicine, or post-acute care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily rounds on all patients in the rehabilitation hospital to assess medical stability, functional progress, and response to therapy.
  • Perform comprehensive history and physical exams on admission and as clinically indicated during the inpatient stay.
  • Lead decisions about medical management, medications, pain control, and co-morbid condition stabilization relevant to rehabilitation goals.
  • Partner closely with physical, occupational, and speech therapists to align medical treatment with functional goals and therapy prescriptions.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to discharge planning, ensuring safe transitions to home or next level of care.
  • Engage with nursing staff and case managers to anticipate clinical changes and coordinate timely interventions.
  • Develop and update individualized care plans that integrate medical plans with rehabilitation progress.
  • Ensure documentation meets regulatory and compliance standards for acute rehabilitation facilities.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and family members about diagnosis, progress, goals, and anticipated care trajectory.
  • Support patient education regarding expectations for rehab, risk management, and post-discharge planning.
  • Identify opportunities to improve clinical outcomes, patient safety, and care efficiency.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives that support hospital targets for lengths of stay, readmissions, and functional outcomes.
