About The Position

Hem/Onc provides care for Veterans with a variety of benign and malignant conditions, participates in clinical, translational and basic research, serves as a hub for training of fellows, residents and students. An outpatient infusion unit and a dedicated pharmacist ensure efficient and safe delivery of biologics, chemotherapies, transfusions and other therapies as needed. Hem/Onc clinics work closely with Palliative care and a dedicated Social worker, as well as advanced practice providers. The Hem/Onc physician's actual clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process and the overall demand for emergency services. Provides direct hands-on patient care for patients with oncological and benign/malignant Hematologic conditions. Assesses patients for acute illnesses and determine whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting. Manages chronic disease. Provides clinical guidance over the phone, by Secure Messaging and through the mail. Ensures accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations. Participates in tele-health with CBOC's and other health care locations to help care for Veterans remotely. Supervising and teaching Hem/Onc fellows, medical residents and students from affiliated academic partners. Also required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants. Is expected to seek academic appointments with one or more or our affiliates, and to participate in activities related to that appointment as deemed needed for professional development and for assistance in teaching. Supervise, perform and teach any procedures within the approved scope for and Medical Hem/Onc Participates in various Hem/Onc Section and Medical Service conferences as required Participates in Quality Assurance activities Engages actively in Research by performing, supervising, acquiring results and presenting and publish those data, in a manner consistent with VA research policies Involves oneself in the works of various hospital and affiliated medical school committees Helps with administrative responsibilities for the Section Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care. Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication. Provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education; evaluates effectiveness and level of patient/family member understanding of teaching provider. Utilizes the CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies, radiological studies, etc. Fulfills Medical Center/Medical Service continuing education requirements Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures. Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.

Requirements

  • 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
