About The Position

The VA San Diego Healthcare System is seeking a part-time Physician specializing in Neurology to provide neurological care to patients and educate trainees. This role involves addressing clinical and administrative needs within the neurology clinics and inpatient services, with a focus on the ALS Program and Spinal Cord Injury and Associated Disorders Center. The position may also include a joint appointment with the University of California San Diego (UCSD), potentially increasing overall compensation.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Completed residency training in an accredited core specialty training program.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board eligible/Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Eligibility for an academic appointment to the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine faculty.

Nice To Haves

  • Fellowship in Neuromuscular neurology or Neurophysiology.
  • Experience in either of these fields.
  • Record of academic accomplishments commensurate with the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor.

Responsibilities

  • Attend to the clinical and administrative needs of the neurology clinics and inpatient services.
  • Run a clinic with hours to be determined, potentially one full day or two half-day clinics.
  • Work in coordination with the ALS Program and Spinal Cord Injury and Associated Disorders Center.
  • Act as a consultant to clinical services, emphasizing treatment of spinal cord injury and ALS.
  • Document procedures, consultations, and healthcare decisions in the medical record.
  • Communicate emergent findings directly to the treating physician/service in a timely manner.
  • Direct the activities of residents, technologists, and nurses assisting them.
  • Teach residents, medical students, and other healthcare personnel seeking training in Neurology.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities to improve patient safety, performance, and quality of care.
  • Develop and adhere to standard procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain a safe environment and ensure patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Ensure accurate CPT coding and compliance with federal statutes, VA directives, and The Joint Commission standards.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
