About The Position

The Emergency Department (ED) is staffed and equipped to provide emergency care across a broad spectrum of illnesses, injuries and mental health disorders. Emergency care is provided in a clearly defined area dedicated to this function and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Emergency physicians are expected to be present and immediately available to provide emergency care during clinical tours as defined by the needs of patients including appropriate transition of care in the ED. Responsibilities

  • Provision of emergency care including evaluation, stabilization, management, and treatment of emergent conditions for patients presenting to the ED, seeking emergent care, that is in line and consistent with all applicable standards and regulations and in compliance with the intent of the Emergency Medicine Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) 42 United States Code (U.S.C.) 1395dd, including stabilization and transfer of patients for definitive care to appropriate other VA and non-VA Medical Centers for patients whose care may exceed the Medical Center's capacity, capability and/or function. NOTE: While not technically subject to EMTALA and the regulations implementing the Act issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), VA complies with the intent of EMTALA requirements regarding the transfer of acute patients among health care facilities.
  • Supervision, teaching, and evaluation of the performance of students, residents, fellows and other trainees participating in institutionally approved educational activities in emergency medicine.
  • Support and participation in the existing Emergency Medicine Systems (EMS) including provision of medical direction for the patients in the pre-hospital setting, where appropriate.
  • Consultation of and/or referral of patients to the appropriate medical, surgical and psychiatric services for the management of conditions treated in the ED, including transition of care to the inpatient setting for definitive care, and to the outpatient setting for follow-up care, as appropriate.
  • Provision of assistance to Advanced Practice Practitioners (APPs) with emergency care exceeding the privileging and scope of APP practice, and as required for the emergency care needs of the patients.
  • Completion of all required components of standard documentation within the electronic health record, and inclusive of the requirements associated with medical student, resident, fellow and other trainee documentation, pursuant to applicable Medical Center and VHA policies.
  • Participation in section, service and hospital committees; peer review; quality and improvement and quality assurance programs; systems redesign programs; patient flow and productivity improvements, and other administrative and similar programs as designated by the Emergency Medicine Section and the Medicine Service.
  • Timely completion of all periodic training and in-service activities as required by the Emergency Medicine Section, the Medicine Service, the Roudebush VAMC and the VHA.
  • Participation in scientific research and other educational and scholarly activities, as appropriate, and in accordance with institutional research regulatory requirements.
  • Performance of other applicable duties as assigned by the Emergency Medicine Section, and the Medicine Service.
