About The Position

The primary functions of the Facility Medical Director ("FMD") are to direct, monitor, evaluate, and coordinate the medical care services provided to patients at the facility as well as to support and mentor facility medical personnel with the goal of providing high quality patient care and outstanding customer service. The FMD directly supervises the physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners of his/her facility. The FMD reports directly to the Regional Medical Director. The FMD collaborates with the Practice Manager in the coordination of medical and non-medical policies and procedures, as well as overall facility operations. The FMD shall be responsible to the Regional Medical Director, and, ultimately, the Board of Directors for the appropriate conduct of the professional medical staff at his/her facility. The FMD’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Makes recommendations to the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Board of Directors as to when a new physician or other clinician may be needed at the facility. Monitors facility quality and medical services in concert with the Senior Medical Director, Quality Improvement Committee, and Steering Committee. Assists in implementation of policies/procedures for improving quality scores (Patient Experience, Access, Quality, etc.) and chronic disease coding (HCC, etc.) capture. Acts as a resource for other clinicians to assist in their achievement of these measures. Serves as Chair of the facility's Patient Care Committee (PCC), Facility Quality Review Committee (FQRC), and other committees as appropriate. Initiates ad hoc workgroups and/or improvement initiatives, acting in an advisory capacity, to address important facility issues. Monitors and evaluates committee progress. Assists staff and providers with difficult patients (i.e., irate, combative, litigious, medically complex, etc.) and serves as a resource for medical questions and issues. Provides input to Senior Medical Director, Foundation Board, and/or Group Board regarding policies and procedures for the medical group and management services organization. Monitors facility's compliance with respect to established policies and procedures. Monitors and adjusts facility operations, supports facility goals, and serves as a positive role model for all facility personnel in coordination with the Practice Manager (“Dyad team"). Works with the Practice Manager to promote positive attitudes and improve facility morale and operations. Attends quarterly Facility Medical Director/Dyad and Board of Director meetings as well as monthly Leadership Dyad meetings. Assists CMO/Senior Medical Director in implementing medical policies and strategies. Acts as a resource for new physicians, directly mentoring or assigning mentors as needed and assessing their needs as they integrate into the group/office. Reviews, monitors and proctors procedures (i.e., vasectomy, colposcopy, etc.), or appoints physician proctors. Approves physician, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner vacation requests, ensuring facility coverage according to the 50% rule. Monitors provider efficiency and schedules to ensure provider access. Selects physicians to assist FMD and/or perform FMD duties in his/her absence and allocates appropriate percentage of FMD compensation for such coverage. Supervises physician assistants and nurse practitioners or assigns responsibility to another physician. Supervision includes seeing joint patients, signing prescriptions, and progress notes, when appropriate. Assesses ASAP and STAT referrals. Educates providers regarding appropriate utilization. Oversees “Second Sign” process within the office. Maintains an open-door policy for facility providers and staff to discuss matters of importance (i.e., problems, concerns, suggestions, etc.). Encourages open communication among staff, providers, and administration. Recognizes unique talents and expertise of facility professional medical staff and obtains input to assist with decision-making processes. Serves as an ex-officio member of the Integration Committee when a provider from his/her facility is being reviewed. Supports marketing efforts to improve community relations and grow the practice. Promotes mission, vision, physician core values, and guiding principles. Participate in leadership conferences, training, and other organized group activities. Monitors provider performance and provides regular feedback and coaching as needed. Will lead the process of performance improvement, including documentation of these efforts & working with HR to institute Corrective Action Plans when required.

Requirements

  • The FMD shall have demonstrated leadership ability and a willingness to collaborate with the Practice Manager to further the goals of the facility, Professional Corporation and management services organization.
  • The FMD shall be a California-licensed physician.
  • Must currently be a practicing physician with MemorialCare Medical Group
  • Must be a current MCMG shareholder physician.
  • Must have excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to perform essential Primary Care Physician medical functions.
  • Travel between MemorialCare locations.

Nice To Haves

  • Leadership experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with LEAN methodology is preferred.
