About The Position

Essentia Health is seeking new partners to join their regional Emergency Medicine team based in Duluth, MN, a city recognized for its outdoor lifestyle and remote-ready capabilities. The medical community in Duluth is thriving, and the team is looking to fill positions due to retirements and ongoing needs. The practice emphasizes excellence in patient care and camaraderie, providing high-quality emergency care through a hub-and-spoke model across urban and rural environments. Physicians will experience variety by working shifts in Duluth and at a subset of six regional EDs, with flexible scheduling. The team boasts competitive compensation and benefits, a low turnover rate, and strong support from leadership. The goal is to fill this position in 2026. The Duluth ED handles 42,000 patients annually in a new 40-bed facility, serving a large catchment area with comprehensive specialist and subspecialist support (PICU/NICU, pediatric sub-specialists, neuro-interventional, STEMI teams). Shifts are 8 or 9 hours with double and triple physician coverage and APP support 7 days/week. Admissions are to St. Mary’s Medical Center, a 330-bed Level I Adult and Level II Peds Trauma Center. The role involves a full spectrum of emergency medicine, including pediatrics, and offers teaching opportunities for FM residents and medical students. The work environment is described as supportive and fun, with collaborative consultants and strong, experienced nurses. Excellent behavioral health resources, including psychiatry consult service, social work, and case management, are available. Regional sites (Aurora, Virginia, Moose Lake, Sandstone, Deer River, Superior WI) have annual ED volumes of 3.5K-12K patients, all Level IV trauma, admitting to their own hospitals, with complex cases transferred to Duluth. Scheduling is flexible, allowing physicians to find a fulfilling mix of locations. Commutes from Duluth range from 10 to 70 minutes. Virginia & Superior sites have 12-hour physician shifts with 12 hours of APP support, while Aurora, Moose Lake, Sandstone, & Deer River offer single coverage, 12-hour or optional 24-hour shifts, with telemedicine support for various specialties.
