About The Position

City of Hope Medical Group is seeking an Academic Cytopathologist to join our team in Duarte. Join one of the nation’s leading comprehensive cancer centers. As Chair of the Department of Pathology at City of Hope, we invite applications for a full-time Cytopathologist to join our clinical faculty at our flagship campus in Duarte, California. This recruitment reflects our strategic commitment to strengthening subspecialty expertise and advancing academic programs in digestive system malignancies. We seek a mission-driven, board-certified academic pathologist with expertise in gastrointestinal cancers who will support growing clinical volumes, contribute to translational research initiatives, and engage in education and mentorship. The position will also include teaching responsibilities, particularly for our pathology fellows and other trainees who rotate through the Department. Our faculty are dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration, high-impact scholarship, and delivering subspecialized diagnostic excellence within a nationally recognized cancer program. As an academic medical center, City of Hope expects faculty to actively engage in scholarship through research and publication while also fulfilling a required commitment to teaching and mentorship of fellows, residents, and students, making both academic productivity and education fundamental responsibilities of this role.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have an MD or equivalent medical degree and possess or be eligible for an unrestricted California medical license.
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology or equivalent is required.
  • Fellowship training in Cytopathology and board certification or eligibility for Cytopathology is required.
  • The candidate must possess excellent communication skills and experience in collaboration with medical and surgical oncologists and researchers.
  • Applicants must have evidence of research and publication productivity.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in surgical pathology specialties. In addition to Cytopathology, we highly prefer subspecialty expertise in additional areas of surgical pathology, such as Breast, Head and Neck, or Bone and Soft Tissue pathology.
  • Academic record consistent with appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Main clinical responsibilities will include the cytopathology diagnostic service which currently accessions approximately 11,800 cases per year, predominantly non-gynecological and FNA cases.
  • Proficiency in performing fine-needle aspiration procedure is required.
  • Use digital pathology to provide pathology expertise in the COH national network.
  • Develop and support translational and clinical research in cytopathology.
  • Participate in the training of fellows in our ACGME-accredited programs.
  • Provide intraoperative consultations, participate in on-call rotations, and perform autopsy duties as part of the department's responsibilities.
