About The Position

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking caring, dynamic, and attentive applicants to provide an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate public health hospital environment. The Physician Assistants (PA) assist in the diagnostic and therapeutic oversight of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings in medical disciplines. The PA works under the supervision, but not necessarily in the presence of a qualified licensed physician (supervision includes rounds and review of patients, periodic written & verbal review of performance). Schedule: 8\:30 a.m. to 5\:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Days off are weekends, with other days off as assigned. Covers 4 weekends and one holiday for vent and subacute inpatients. About the Shattuck Hospital: Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness. Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. Requirements

  • Expertise in physical diagnosis, including medical history-taking and evaluations.
  • Knowledge of electrocardiography and diagnostic radiology fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with medical records and terminology.
  • Awareness of safety practices in medical facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and examine patients through medical histories, physical exams, and laboratory tests.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments tailored to patient needs.
  • Perform and interpret routine and specialized diagnostics, including lab work, imaging, and electrocardiography.
  • Carry out therapeutic procedures like injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, and fracture management.
  • Counsel patients on physical and mental health, disease prevention, family planning, and more.
  • Provide care for community and correctional health patients in inpatient settings.
  • Independently perform life-saving evaluations and therapeutic interventions.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date electronic medical records.
  • Participate in staff meetings, committees, and the rapid response team, as needed.
