About The Position

This service line is a team of seven that work 100% solely inpatient on the CUH MICU service, most recently in both COVID and non-COVID MICU needs. The current team of 7 work 3 to 4 days on with 3 to 4 days off. Shifts are 13 hours from 5:30a to 6:30p with nights being 5:30p to 6:30a. Every member of the team rotates through days and nights. We're looking for Physician Assistants or Acute Care Nurse Practitioners to take initiative and be independent in order entry and managing most of the complex medical problems that present in the medical ICU. APPs must possess the ability to admit and/or transfer patients independently without help, display recognition of sick patients and urgency, properly evaluate problems and generate a differential diagnosis, initiate and adjust treatment plans per patient response and must be able to perform bedside procedures (central/arterial lines; thoracentesis; paracentesis; thoracostomy; intubations) for which they bill independently. Requirements

  • Master's Degree Graduate of a Master's degree or higher Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program OR Master's Degree Master's degree or higher in nursing, documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification Upon Hire and Licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board Upon Hire OR Master's Degree or higher in nursing, documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Current applicable Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross based on UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of critical care experience as an APP preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
  • Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate and based on specialty and training.
  • Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families, and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
  • Facilitates/participates in quality related initiatives and/or clinical research protocols through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings, to improve clinical and system practice performance.
  • Collaborates in research projects and protocols; and routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
