The Physician Assistant functions as first or second assist in the operating room, including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds, etc. The PA will triage patient calls and evaluate patient problems. Conducts physical exams, taking medical history, image interpretation and patient evaluation/care. This is a full time position is working directly with an Arthritis orthopedic surgeon and team. Scheduled day hours are Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM. This role has some flexibility with the schedule to best meet the needs of the team and patient care. This role involves working closely with the surgeon and second APP to diagnose and treat patients with arthritis conditions; this role will be assisting in surgery as needed. Primary location will be our Vadnais Heights Campus but this team also offers clinics at our Woodlake campus in Woodbury, MN a few times a month. The role also involves taking call with the surgeon throughout the year.

Responsibilities

• Functions as first or second assist in the operating room, including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds.
• Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. Responds to emergencies including use of CPR.
• Prepares patient for surgery, including positioning, skin preparation, administration of local anesthetic and equipment preparation.
• Conducts physical exams, taking medical history, image interpretation and patient evaluation/care.
• Consults with physician as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA's scope of work.
• Orders diagnostic tests and scans and prescribes medications.
• Administers injections, participates in suture and dressing removal and manages simple fracture management/cast application and removal.
• Counsels patient/family on preventive health care, including pre- and post-operative education.
• Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care.
