About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Family Medicine is seeking a Physician Assistant to perform direct patient care under physician supervision. This role involves exercising autonomy in medical decision-making, assisting in the education of healthcare students, and providing a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Requirements

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.
  • Graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
  • Previous experience in a primary care environment providing care to adults and children.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 1-year clinical experience after completion of PA training is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with EPIC is highly desirable.
  • 2+ years' experience in a primary care setting is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care responsibilities as directed by a supervising physician.
  • Obtain medical history and perform physical examinations.
  • Assess, assist, diagnose, and treat medical or surgical problems and record findings.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, and care of wounds.
  • Perform office surgical procedures including skin biopsy, mole or wart removal, toenail removal, and incision and drainage of abscesses.
  • Provide basic care for orthopedic problems including strains, sprains, dislocations, and simple fractures.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health matters.
  • Assist in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care.
  • Refer patients to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated.
  • Evaluate, treat, and institute procedures for emergency medical problems.
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities and resources for patient referral.
  • Assist in ordering drugs and supplies, record keeping, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Admit patients to hospital or health care facility as directed.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests and special medical exams.
  • Order diets, physical therapy, or other rehabilitative services.
  • Distribute properly packaged and labeled prescription drugs when necessary.
  • Order medications and administer drugs.
  • Direct other medical personnel in the execution of patient care.
  • Participate in educating fellows, residents, and students.
  • Assist with clinical research and trials.
  • Participate in committees within the division and department.
