About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Urology is seeking to hire a full-time Physician Assistant with an interest in general urology with an emphasis on providing specialized care to a urologic oncology patient population. After demonstrating competency under the guidance, supervision, and discretion of a supervising physician, the Physician Assistant will provide direct care in an outpatient setting, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making to support quality care and positive patient outcomes. The role involves exercising clinical competency and expertise in general urology with an emphasis on providing specialized care in the area of urologic oncology. The Physician Assistant will function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for a defined patient population, collaborating with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care. The position promotes health maintenance across the continuum of care, performs medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and prescribes/dispenses medications under a collaborative practice agreement. It also involves conducting independent clinics for selected urology return patients, providing anticipatory guidance and counseling, documenting patient care, and coordinating referrals. The Physician Assistant will serve in a consultative or resource capacity within the department and community, participate in quality assessment/improvement/research programs, assume administrative activities, and engage in educational activities to enhance clinical knowledge and expertise.

Requirements

  • Comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.
  • Graduation from an accredited PA educational program.
  • Certification by the NCCPA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to function with a high degree of independence while actively collaborating with other health care team members.
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Iowa.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous patient care experience in urology.
  • 1-3 years experience in an outpatient health care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care in an outpatient setting, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making to support quality care and positive patient outcomes.

  • Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
  • Perform medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications when a collaborative practice agreement is in place.
  • Conduct independent clinics for selected urology return patients.
  • Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.
  • Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.
  • Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies as needed.
  • Serve in a consultative or resource capacity to other divisions, the department, and the community as needed.
  • Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
  • Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Assume responsibility for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.
  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals as delegated.
  • Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical knowledge and expertise.
  • Participate in educational activities in the department, hospital, community and professional organizations.
