About The Position

The Hackensack UMC Trauma Physician's Assistant plays a crucial role in assisting, monitoring, and managing the daily needs of trauma patients under the supervision of a physician. This position requires 24/7 coverage, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, ensuring comprehensive care for patients in a trauma setting.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an approved physician's assistant program accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
  • Physician Assistant License.
  • Certification by the National Commission for Certified Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) within one year of initial employment.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains a detailed and accurate history, identifies problems, and presents information to the supervising physician.
  • Orders or prescribes medication, adhering to protocols and specific MD directions, and signs with own name and license number.
  • Assists a supervising surgeon in the operating room when a second assistant is deemed necessary.
  • Assists supervising physician in a procedure room when a qualified physician is present.
  • Writes post-operative/post-procedure notes and orders for the supervising physician.
  • Performs as the first line person responsible for post-procedure management of patients as requested by the primary physician.
  • Starts IVs, inserts foley catheters and nasogastric tubes, irrigates foley catheters, orders transfusions, performs venipuncture, and conducts debridements.
  • Participates in research trials by collecting, aggregating, and entering data.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies care accordingly, ensuring effective communication with patients and caregivers.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
