The surgical physician assistant is responsible for assisting in the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care of the patient under the direction of the supervising physician throughout the network. Additionally, the surgical physician assistant is responsible for providing surgical in-house coverage on a periodic rotating 24-hour basis as scheduled. As with any other health care professional, the physician assistant is charged with being a patient advocate in the health care system.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant Program; must be certified by the NCCPA and eligible for a Pennsylvania license as issued by the State Board of Medical Education and Licensure.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Initial evaluation, history and physical examination of all surgical patients whether they are inpatient, ambulatory patients.
  • Assist the supervising physician in the intra-operative care of the patient as the first or second assistant.
  • Daily evaluation of patients, appropriate use of Electronic Medical Record.
  • Perform therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as directed by the supervising physician. (See credentials list.)
  • As available, assist the supervising physician with the weekly surgical clinics as assigned.
  • Attend appropriate continuing medical education so as to maintain the National Certification and Pennsylvania License.
  • Assist the supervising physician with the evaluation and management of their in-house and emergency admission patients.
  • Adjunct faculty to various college/university programs as clinical instructors.
  • Perform History and Physical Examinations as well as pre-anesthesia evaluations in Pre-Admission Testing and Interventional Radiology as assigned.
  • Act as supplemental staff to other Campuses in the capacity listed above.
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment and knowledge of growth and development appropriate to the age of the patient treated
  • Demonstrates/models St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network core values and customer service behaviors in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
  • Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process and Safety.
