The Wentworth-Douglass Orthopedics team provides expert care in various subspecialties such as hand and upper extremities, spine, sports medicine, total joint, trauma, and foot and ankle. They utilize a multidisciplinary, integrated care model, collaborating with physicians, musculoskeletal providers, physiatrists, interventional pain specialists, and physical/occupational therapists to design personalized treatment plans aimed at restoring and maintaining comfort and function for patients with athletic injuries to degenerative conditions. This full-time Physician Assistant position supports the Orthopedics team, working Monday through Friday with rotating weekends and holidays as needed. The PA will operate under the clinical supervision of the Medical Director and the operational direction of the Practice Manager. Responsibilities include serving as a first-assist in orthopedic cases at Wentworth Douglass Hospital two days a week and seeing patients at the clinic located at 7 Marsh Brook Drive in Somersworth, NH, for the remainder of the week. The Physician Assistant is a licensed provider responsible for the assessment and management of diverse patient populations, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, care plan development, and ongoing evaluation.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Physician Assistant required
  • Physician Assistant [State License] - Generic - HR Only required
  • 2 years of experience as a PA required

Responsibilities

  • Performing & documenting appropriate and comprehensive orthopedic history and physical exam
  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including, but not limited to splint, brace or cast application/removal, wound care/debridement, suturing/suture removal, injection of steroid and anesthetic agents, and joint aspiration
  • Educating, instructing and counseling patients and families
  • Ordering and interpreting x-rays, MRIs and other diagnostic tests as needed
  • Determining/coordinating the treatment plan and follow-up schedule
  • Following up with patients regarding results and ongoing treatment
  • Consulting with appropriate resources as needed and referring to appropriate specialties
  • Documenting patients’ treatment, response and progress notes and entering orders in EPIC in accordance with Medical Staff policies
  • Reviewing patient cases with on-call physician as needed
  • Managing in-basket messages and phone calls
  • Acting as first assist in the operating room
  • May provide coverage for our Orthopedic Walk-In
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population
