About The Position

This position is for an Advanced Practice Provider supporting the UCSF-MarinHealth Orthopedics Service, as a team member with the Orthopedic Surgery program at MarinHealth Medical Center and MarinHealth Medical Network. The position is anticipated to include inpatient and outpatient care as well as assistance in the operating room. It will be primarily located in Marin County at locations including MarinHealth Medical Center and outpatient clinics. The Advanced Practice Provider will work with multiple attending physicians and will evolve with the growth of the program as a team member.

Requirements

  • Completion of graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Must be certified by the National Commission on Certification and licensed in the State of California
  • Active and unrestricted Physician Assistant license in state of CA
  • Must hold current national board certification by first day of work and maintain
  • Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California as required by the clinical specialty
  • Must be eligible for payer enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid
  • BLS and ACLS (American Heart Association) required

Nice To Haves

  • 2-5 years of PA experience preferred
  • 2 years in specialty area highly desired
  • Prior experience in a medical office environment preferred

Responsibilities

  • Work with the physicians/surgeons/colleagues that provide emergency orthopedics call coverage for the hospital and other clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management based on accepted practice, including but not limited to, performing histories and physicals, pre-operative planning/coordinating with anesthesia/outside providers and PCPs as applicable, responding to change in patient status, providing needed prescriptions/evaluations/referral/treatments as permitted under their delegation of services agreement.
  • Provide home health services and DME, DMV evaluations, referrals, consultations, PT, and order radiographic or diagnostic requests, and specialized treatment privileges (e.g. chemotherapy with privilege certification).
  • May also provide patient education and arrange follow-up appointments.
  • Performs clinical assessments and management services on Orthopedic patients which includes interpretation of a history and physical exam.
  • Coordinates perioperative patient care including the following roles:
  • Performs pre-operative history and physical examinations.
  • Facilitates patient education.
  • Initiates pre-and-post-operative orders (subject to authorization/co-signature of responsible physician).
  • Makes daily rounds on in-hospital patients as needed to evaluate patient progress and enter notes in chart, which will be countersigned by the physician.
  • Makes daily rounds on weekends as set by a pre-determined schedule and as necessary
  • Dictates discharge summaries.
  • Removes sutures, staples, and drains; change dressings and performs appropriate wound care.
  • Assesses patients based on standardized protocols.
  • Assists in the operating room
  • Works with the practice assistants to address patient queries under the guidance of the supervising physician.
  • Response to patients shall be timely
  • Serves as assistant during specified orthopedic surgical procedures.
  • Works in close collaboration with the emergency room and trauma teams to assist in caring for othopedic surgery patients.
  • Does literature search and participates in clinical investigations and education.
  • Manages prophylaxis, post-operative and pain medication management.
  • Responds to My Chart, In-Basket inquiries in a timely manner, no later than 24 hours.
  • To evaluate, assess and create a documented plan of treatment per patient’s presenting HPI or established plan of care under the collaboration/supervision of an attending physician.
  • To answer clinically relevant patient medical advice calls or during bedside communications or coordination with health care professionals, patients and their families as necessary.
  • To independently or in a shared visit model, evaluate routine, acute, critical, new patients, or specialty consultations when needed or required and discuss with attending and staff as appropriate.
  • Be able to interpret and act upon ordered tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
  • To assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty.
  • Effectively communicate with family or patients in person, telephone and/or other electronic modalities in a timely manner.
  • Initiates consultations and monitors scheduling by patients for special tests.
  • Consults with attending physician as needed, when patient requests it, or if the patient’s problem is beyond his/her scope of clinical management.
  • Evaluate for initial management of inpatient and emergency room consults when necessary and to assist the attending physician with management of consults as necessary.
  • Closes all encounters within 48 hours in Apex.
  • Performs other duties as set in the “Scope and Setting of Practice”
  • Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Maintains open communication channels with all members of the health care team.
  • Communicates well with patients and families.
  • Knowledgeable about and adheres to all applicable Medical Center and department specific infection control, health and safety policies and procedures, including annual safety training.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and functional work environment.
  • Exemplary customer service is required.
  • Must be able to document competent performance of the skills required to perform in the role described.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, professional, computer and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a diverse professional and patient population.
  • To assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty/service/pathways.
  • Engage in a timely and efficient discharge of patients on the inpatient service for which you are responsible.
  • Assist in coordinating patient transfers according to policy.
  • May be required to act as first assist in the OR.
