About The Position

The Critical Care & Emergency Medicine Advanced Practitioner Fellowship Programs are a 12-month, post-graduate training program designed for physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) seeking to advance their expertise in high-acuity patient care. Advanced Practitioner Fellows participate in immersive, hands-on clinical rotations across intensive care units, emergency departments, and specialty services, gaining proficiency in advanced diagnostics, procedural skills, and evidence-based management of critically ill and emergent patients. This program blends structured didactic education with supervised clinical practice, fostering confidence, autonomy, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Advanced Practitioner Fellows work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care in fast-paced, high acuity environments. Graduates emerge prepared for practice in critical care and emergency medicine settings, equipped with advanced clinical judgment, procedural competence, and the ability to thrive under pressure while maintaining compassionate, high-quality care. Requirements

  • Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner or Medical Physician Assistant with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania.
  • Physician Assistants must also have a current certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • New graduate applications accepted.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required prior to hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience desired, preferably in critical care, trauma, and/or acute care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Works in conjunction with clinicians and staff to care for medical, surgical, critical care, and other patients as requested.
  • Performs initial evaluation, history, and physical examination of all patients seen.
  • Performs in depth, systematic assessment of all assigned patients as needed for clinical interventions.
  • Performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as directed by the supervising physician. (See credentials list).
  • Participates in performance improvement activities, meetings, educational projects, and research projects.
  • Participates in the research, development, implementation, and tracking of clinical management guidelines.
  • Participates in education of patients, families, staff, and residents.
  • Actively develops care plans and dispositions in conjunction with the case management team
  • Attends appropriate continuing medical education so as to maintain Pennsylvania Licensure and be in compliance with the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Standards for Trauma Center Accreditation.
  • Complies with Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Standards.
  • Follows the guidelines set forth in the PA/NP fellow manual.
  • Supports the philosophy and strategic plan of the St. Luke’s University Hospital and Health Network..
  • Demonstrates ability to develop effective working relationships within the hospital and St. Luke's Health Network.
  • Participates in identifying department needs and supports departmental goals and objectives.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
  • Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
  • Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
  • Assist with critical care and/or medical/surgical floor coverage as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
