About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Surgical Services, the Physician Assistant (PA) in the Surgery Department provides advanced clinical support to surgeons and patients across pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. The PA performs patient assessments, assists in surgical procedures, orders and interprets diagnostic tests, and develops treatment plans in collaboration with the surgical team. This role also includes educating patients and families, coordinating follow-up care, and ensuring compliance with hospital protocols and quality standards. The PA serves as a vital link between surgeons, nursing staff, and patients to promote efficient, safe, and compassionate surgical care. Always demonstrates Service Excellence standards. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer skills required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Customer service skills required.
  • Understanding of credentialing and re-credentialing functions. The Joint Commission, State and Federal Regulatory Requirements, and overall knowledge of an organized Medical Staff required.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of accredited AMA recognized PA training program required.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in acute care facility.
  • Current physician’s assistant license in the state of Florida required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support ACLS at start date.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS at start date.

Responsibilities

  • Practices in accordance with acceptable medical standards.
  • Informs each patient that he or she is not a physician, works under the direction of a fully licensed physician experienced in the specialty in which the PA will practice.
  • Reviews all historical and physical data according to medical staff by-laws and regulations.
  • In an emergency situation, may render emergency medical services necessary to avoid disability or death of an injured person until a doctor arrives.
  • Prepares admission orders and performs detailed histories and physicals on assigned surgery patients.
  • Assists in the overall preparation of the patient for surgery.
  • Performs daily rounds and follow-ups on all patients and consults, including physical exams, diagnostic and therapeutic intervention, routine lab orders and diagnostic tests after conferring with the MD.
  • Participates as assigned in surgical operating procedures for inclusion in patient medical records, write pre-and post op orders, brief op notes, procedure notes, transfer and discharge orders, medication reconciliations and prescriptions.
  • Dictates discharge summaries.
  • Provides patient education and participates in the education of medical residents, nurses and students.
  • Completes medical records in a timely manner according to the medical staff by-laws and rules and regulations.
  • Ensures all entries of orders/progress notes are co-signed by his/her attending physician.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
