About The Position

The UMass Memorial Health Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Critical Care is a 12-month program focused on preparing Physician Assistants (PAs) and Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs) for a successful career in critical care medicine. The fellowship includes clinical and didactic curricula designed to provide a solid foundation in the management of critically ill patients. Our rotations provide APP fellows with exposure to a wide variety of complex disease processes with rotations in the medical, surgical, trauma, and neurological critical care units. The curriculum includes protected academic time for didactics, simulation-based learning experiences, procedural training, and journal club. The PA or NP fellow practices under the general supervision of a physician. Their scope of practice includes: obtaining a complete medical history; performing a physical examination; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan; prescribing and/or dispensing medication; assisting in surgery or other invasive procedures; and counseling patients and families under supervision of a physician. In addition, the PA or NP fellow is required to participate in a program of instruction provided by the Fellowship Program and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of this Program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director.

Requirements

  • For Nurse Practitioners
  • Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (preferably ACNP/AGACNP)
  • Eligible for Massachusetts NP license
  • Eligible for Board Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
  • Eligible for Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
  • BLS and ACLS
  • For Physician Assistants
  • Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Eligible for Massachusetts license, issued by the Physician Assistant Board
  • Eligible for certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Eligible for Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
  • BLS and ACLS

Responsibilities

  • Attend didactic and simulation sessions every other week
  • Attend Journal Clubs and present patient case studies
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Conduct in-depth health histories and physical examinations
  • Analyses data collected to determine health status and identify differential diagnoses based on history, physical exam, and clinical findings.
  • Develop and implement care plans with physicians and patients
  • Manage therapeutic interventions and perform advanced procedures
  • Reassess and modify plan treatment plans to achieve medical and health goals.
  • Documents and communicate care outcomes and clinical findings to determine effectiveness of plan of care.
